Professional Video Production Lighting

Being a television commercial and video production company operating in Philadelphia and New Jersey, we get many questions from clients about our lighting techniques and how important is good lighting when it comes to producing videos and commercials. in a nutshell, I’d say its the second most important aspect of any video or photographic process. The most important being the content, IE what is the story and is it interesting enough to watch and memorable enough to stay with the viewer a long time.

I am not going to dive into good lighting technique on this page, as there are plenty of great tutorials online, in books and schools to be found. I really would rather point out to our visitors that just because someone has what appear to be great equipment, does not mean that they know how to use it and lighting as mentioned above is at the very top of importance. There has been a large push by camera manufacturers over the last 5 years to market their hardware as the be-all end-all to make you a famous movie director. And many young and aspiring people have taken the bait hook-line and sinker. Many have buried themselves in tremendous debt over this delusion and ironically, the camera is the last element to making an image work for any marketing project.

So while looking around the net for a video production company in your area or a cinematographer to shoot your commercial, first look for their body of work. Next, how long has their company been in business. Many so-called directors and companies are far from having the experience they proclaim online. They know its nearly impossible for you to verify any of the facts they write. They are banking on your inability to ferret out the truth. Anyway, I digress. Back to lighting…

A competent DP can light a scene with a single light bulb, shoot it with an iphone and make it look good. There will be limitations, but it’s knowing those limitation s and how they apply to the script and story that separates the twenty year veteran to the twenty year old punk that says they can film what ever you got with a dslr. If your company is located in New Jersey or Philadelphia and you are looking for some direction in this industry, please read our home page as there is more information there for you to consider.
